Close to the Finish Line? How to Stay Motivated

Being close to finishing college can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting. After putting in so much time and effort, you may find yourself thinking, “I am so close, but I am tired.”

Losing motivation near the end does not mean you do not care about your goals. Sometimes you just need a way to keep moving forward.

Look at What Is Left

Instead of thinking about everything you have done over the years, focus on what is still ahead. Look at your remaining classes, assignments, or requirements and write them down.

Seeing a shorter list can remind you that you are closer than you think.

Focus on the Next Step

You do not need to think about graduation every day. Focus on what needs your attention right now.

Finish the assignment due this week. Prepare for the next exam. Attend your class. Then move on to the next thing.

Remember Why You Started

Think about what finishing college will allow you to do next. Maybe you want to transfer, start a career, qualify for a new job, or reach a personal goal.

Your reason does not have to be the same as someone else's. What matters is that it gives you something to work toward when motivation is low.

Give Yourself Credit

Do not overlook how much you have already accomplished. Completing college takes time, and getting this far means you have already handled challenges along the way.

You do not have to feel motivated every day to finish. Sometimes staying consistent is enough.

If you need help planning your remaining classes or understanding what you still need to complete, Coalinga College Counseling can help you review your next steps.

You are close. Keep your focus on what is in front of you and take it one step at a time.
