Easy Ways to Meet People and Get Involved on Campus

Starting college can sometimes feel like everyone already knows each other. The truth is, many students are also looking for people to talk to, study with, and spend time with.

You do not have to become involved in everything. Even one small connection can make campus feel more familiar.

Start With the People Around You

Your classmates are one of the easiest places to start. Say hello before class, ask someone about an assignment, or sit next to someone new.

If you have a group project or study activity, use it as a chance to get to know your classmates instead of only focusing on the assignment.

Go to Campus Events

Campus events give you something to talk about because everyone is there for the same reason. Look for activities, celebrations, workshops, and other events happening throughout the semester.

You can also bring a classmate with you if going alone feels uncomfortable.

Try a Club or Student Activity

Joining a club can help you meet people who already share an interest with you. You do not have to attend every meeting or take on a leadership role. Showing up and getting familiar with the group is a good start.

If you are not sure what student activities are available, Coalinga College Student Services can help point you toward campus resources.

Give It Some Time

Making friends does not always happen during the first week. You may see the same people in class several times before you start talking.

Keep showing up, introduce yourself when the opportunity comes up, and do not worry about making a large group of friends right away.

Getting involved is less about being everywhere on campus and more about finding a few places where you feel comfortable being yourself.
