Feeling Overwhelmed? How to Ask for Help Early

Sometimes college starts to feel like too much all at once. Classes, assignments, work, family responsibilities, and everything else can pile up before you realize you are struggling.

You do not have to wait until you reach a breaking point to ask for help.

Notice When You Are Struggling

Maybe you are constantly putting off assignments, missing deadlines, having trouble concentrating, or feeling like you cannot catch up. These can be signs that it is time to get some support.

You do not need to have a major problem before reaching out.

Tell Someone What Is Going On

Start with the person who can help with the problem you are facing.

If you are confused about your coursework, talk to your professor or use tutoring. If your class schedule is becoming difficult to manage, Coalinga College Counseling can help you look at your academic plan and options.

You can also visit Student Services to learn about other support available on campus.

Be Specific When You Ask

You do not need to know exactly how someone can fix the problem. You can simply explain what is happening.

For example, you could say, “I am having trouble keeping up with my classes and I do not know where to start.”

That gives the person helping you a place to begin.

Ask Before It Becomes a Crisis

Getting help early gives you more time to make changes. You may be able to adjust your schedule, get tutoring, talk with an instructor, or find another resource before the situation becomes harder to manage.

Asking for help is not a sign that you cannot handle college. Sometimes it is the step that helps you keep going.
