You Belong Here: Finding Community in College

College can look like a place where everyone else has already found their friends, knows what they are doing, and feels comfortable. It can be easy to wonder where you fit in.

You do not have to have everything figured out to be part of your college community.

Community Can Start Small

Finding your people does not always happen through a big event or a new friend group. It might start with talking to someone before class, recognizing a familiar face, or having a professor who knows your name.

Small connections can make a campus feel more welcoming.

Let Yourself Try New Things

You may not know what you enjoy until you give something a chance. Attend an event, visit a student activity, or spend some time in a place where other students gather.

You do not have to commit to everything you try. Exploring different parts of campus can help you discover what feels comfortable.

Remember That Everyone's Experience Is Different

Some students make friends quickly. Others take more time. Some enjoy being involved in many activities, while others feel connected through a few close relationships.

There is no single way to experience college. Your community does not have to look like someone else's.

Start Where You Are

If campus still feels unfamiliar, give yourself time to settle in. Talk to someone new when you can, spend time in spaces where you feel comfortable, and look for opportunities that interest you.

You are not behind because you have not found your community yet. College is a place where you get to discover it.
