Course Classification

Courses numbered 1-49 — are baccalaureate level (transfer) courses. Courses thus numbered are transferable to four- year institutions. Agriculture courses are designed to parallel the work taught in similar courses at California Polytechnic State University or at California State University, Fresno but may not carry the same number.

Courses numbered 50-99 — are associate degree level courses. Courses thus numbered are primarily for the student who does not plan to continue his/her education beyond the community college level; however, occupational education courses may transfer according to articulation agreements. Complete information on articulation is available through the Counseling Center.

Courses Numbered 100-201 — are non-transfer and are non-degree applicable; they are skill building or remedial.

Western Civilization to 1700
HIST 004A is a survey of the development of western culture and civilization from Ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Age of Discovery. Topics will include (but are not limited to) the Greek and Roman legacy, Late Antiquity and the Byzantine World, the Medieval World, the Italian and Northern Renaissance, and the Protestant Reformation.

HIST 004B is a survey of the ongoing evolution of western culture from the 18th century to modernity. Topics will include (but are not limited to) the Age of Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, imperialism, the rise of nationalism, WWI, the Russian Revolution, WWII, and the Cold War.

HIST 017A will guide you through the fascinating origins of the United States of America. You will learn about the fascinating world of Mesoamerica before European contact, the colonization of the American continent, the struggles and triumphs associated with colonial life, the American Revolution, the birth of the Republic, the realities and conflicts associated with slavery, and the American Civil War. Throughout the course, you will analyze primary source material and be challenged with differing points of view in an attempt to understand the complex past of our nation.

HIST 017B will take you on a fascinating historical journey of the United States from the end of the Civil War to the present. HIST 032 will examine the social, political, and economic experiences of Mexicans living in the United States beginning with their Pre-Columbian heritage through the Spanish colonial era, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil Rights Movement. Emphasis will be on how these experiences have helped to shape the culture of Chicanos in the modern era.
