Law, Public Policy, and Society

The Associate in Arts in Law, Public Policy, and Society for Transfer degree will provide students with a seamless transfer to a California State University. This program offers courses that satisfy lower-division General Education requirements in both the physical and social sciences, providing students with a solid foundation in Law, Public Policy, and Society and the standard prerequisites for upper-division coursework leading to the baccalaureate degree. Students who plan to major in Law, Public Policy, and Society should consult the lower-division requirements at the university they plan to attend. This program, through interdisciplinary studies in the administration of justice, business, political science, history, and communications, will provide students with skills in critical thinking, persuasive communication, analytical writing, and a foundational understanding of the behavioral and social sciences. Students will be prepared for majors such as criminal justice, criminology, global intelligence and national security, international relations, philosophy, political science, business, pre-law, and social and behavioral sciences.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will identify and discuss the legal framework for American institutions and systems of justice. 
  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of practical applications and evaluations of policy outcomes in civic culture.
  3. Students will identify and demonstrate effective and appropriate written and oral communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, in a variety of communication contexts and with diverse populations.
  4. Students will critically analyze issues in public policy consistent with constitutional legal standards and mandates.
  5. Students will explain the key components of the criminal justice system.
  6. Analyze, investigate, and compare ideological approaches to governmental systems.
  7. Students will identify and demonstrate effective and appropriate written and oral communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal, in a variety of communication contexts and with diverse populations.


Students must meet the following requirements to qualify for an Associates for Transfer Degree (ADT):

  • Complete 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University (CSU).
  • A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
  • Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0.
  • Minimum grade of “C” for each course in the major.
  • Completion of CalGETC Requirements with a minimum grade of "C".
