Sociology AA-T Degree
The Associate in Arts for Transfer in Sociology is designed to provide students with a seamless transfer to the California State University. This degree provides students with lower-division courses and comprehensive knowledge of the scientific study of human social life. This degree exposes students to the core principles, theoretical perspectives in sociology and to sociological concepts through the analysis of social phenomena. Students will learn to communicate effectively about social issues relating to various groups of people and identify group/cultural influences. Additionally, this degree will educate students on sociological topics from a scientific perspective, using systematic investigation and critical thinking methods.
Program student learning outcomes:
- Students will apply and interpret sociological literacy underscoring the centrality of race, class, and genderin society including multicultural, cross-cultural, and cross-national content in sociological analysis.
- Students will apply and formulate higher order critical thinking skills using major concepts and theoretical perspectives in sociological analysis through written and oral communication.
- Students will apply and appraise an empirical base of sociology across several methodologies, posing sociological questions, developing theoretical explanations, and using primary and secondary data as supporting evidence.
- Students will distinguish the interpersonal, institutional, cultural, and structural mechanisms that produce and maintain inequality.
Students must meet the following requirements to qualify for an Associates for Transfer Degree (ADT):
- Complete 60 semester units or 90 quarter units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University (CSU), including both of the following:
- The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education (CSU GE) Breadth Requirements
- A minimum of 18 semester units or 27 quarter units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
- Obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0
- Minimum grade of “C” (or “P”) for each course in the major, and
- Completion of the IGETC and/or CSU GE-Breadth
