Coalinga College Expands Dual Enrollment, Brings High School Seniors to College Campus

firebaugh1COALINGA, Calif. — Coalinga College is expanding its dual enrollment program to give more high school students in the Central Valley the opportunity to earn college credit — and experience life on a college campus — before graduating.

This fall, the College’s Firebaugh Center is hosting 45 Mendota High School seniors enrolled in three agriculture pathway courses, with additional classes planned for next spring. Instead of taking these courses at their high school, the students travel to the Firebaugh Center, where they learn in college classrooms, engage with faculty, and access campus resources — all while still in high school.

firebaugh2“Dual enrollment is a game-changer for high school students,” said Dr. Carla Tweed, president of Coalinga College. “By partnering with local high schools, we’re empowering students with the confidence, skills, and academic momentum they need to excel in college and beyond. This program is about more than education — it’s about transforming lives and building brighter futures.”

The agriculture pathway program at the Firebaugh Center is one example of Coalinga College’s ongoing efforts to serve its region, which includes the cities of Coalinga, Huron, Avenal, Firebaugh, Mendota and surrounding rural communities.

Through dual enrollment, students gain early exposure to college-level coursework, earn credits toward a degree, and save on future tuition costs. The courses are offered at no cost to students, removing financial barriers and helping them transition more smoothly to higher education.
