Student Rights
It shall be the policy of West Hills Community College District to protect each student’s right to dignity, privacy and equitable treatment.
- Participation in Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS) is voluntary.
- Receiving support services authorized by DSPS does not prevent a student from participating in any other college course, program or activity.
- All records maintained by DSPS shall be protected from disclosure and secured.
- Records are subject to all other requirements for handling of student records as provided in Subchapter 2 (commencing with section 54600) of chapters of the Education Code.
- Information shall be shared with only those individuals who have a legitimate right to know.
- If a student requests accommodations that impact the delivery of instruction, then
the instructor has the right to know the student’s educational limitation(s) and the
appropriate accommodation, with the student’s written permission.
- The nature and origin of the disability are not disclosed to the instructor without the permission of the student.
- If a student grants permission to release information regarding their disability, a release of information form is signed by the student and placed in their DSPS file.
Student Responsibilities
It shall be the policy of West Hills Community College District to treat all students in an equitable and fair manner.
- All students must adhere to the student code of conduct as stated in the college catalog.
- DSPS services may be suspended and possibly terminated for the following reasons:
- Abuse or misuse of equipment and/or services
- If you are using ASL interpreting or captioning services, you must give our office 24 hours’ notice if you will be absent from class.
- You must contact our office at least three days in advance to request an interpreter for events outside of class, such as meeting with a study group, tutoring, etc. All requests must be made directly to our office.
- Failure to measurably benefit from instruction or meet established academic standards.
- Failure to measurably benefit from instruction or meet established academic standards
shall be based on the following criteria:
- Counselor evaluation
- P.A.
- And/or successful completion of classes and academic/vocational goals as stated in the Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP).
